It was a big day for us on April 1st...
Forecasts throughout the week warned of heavy and lingering showers but thankfully they were complete nonsense!
From start to finish our open day was a huge success. The opening ceremony featuring the Deputy Mayor Mike Bonfield went to plan with the exception of a temperamental microphone. Welcomes were made by Helen Knight to John Paish, our celebrity tennis star and Ryan Trickey our new coach.
This was followed with a sincere thank you and farewell to our current coach, Nathan Fowler by Sue Tindale and Gabriel Christmas. Thanks to donations from members, Nathan received a £250 Nike voucher.
With the formalities over, Court 1 was transformed into an exhibition court for an hour or so as spectators were treated to a very tight match featuring John Paish with Nathan Fowler against Ryan Trickey and ex-Swanage Tennis Club Chairperson, Tony Saunders.
John and Nathan took a while to settle but when they did they fought back from being down 1:4 to evens at 4:4. Then every game was matched which forced a tie-break that John and Nathan managed to secure. Because so many games had been racked up in the first set, umpire, Graham Ward announced that a match tie-break would conclude the match. Again, there was little between the pairs but eventually Nathan and John put pressure on Ryan and Tony and claimed victory. Many thanks need to be made to the players (who performed amazingly under the pressure of an onlooking crowd), the ball boys, Edward, Callum and Isaac, and Graham for umpiring.
After a short exhibition match by the juniors, lunch was served.
An incredible spread of hot and cold platters adorned the clubhouse. Tables has been laid and decorated for members of the Dorset LTA, Swanage Town Council and many of our own members to enjoy a feast of savoury and sweets dishes and good company.
The open afternoon attracted lots of interest from families and potential new members. Every court was full and all were entertained with coaching sessions and rallying with members.
The refreshments flowed, the sun continued to shine and Beach Gardens was buzzing with energy all afternoon.
Thank you to all who came along to this incredible day. If you set up, served refreshments, managed membership enquiries, cleaned up, helped on court, played, coached, umpired, ball-boyed, vacuumed or helped in any other way; thank you!Read more from: Category: Social Events
