On Sunday 12 February the Mixed 1 team ventured to Wimborne for their last match of the season. In the journey over, discussions revealed that this match was needed to come top of the league…. no pressure then!!
The team waded over a muddy football pitch to be welcomed by a very hospitable Wimborne team.
A few games in, the heavens opened and the hail and sleet descended. It made already slippy surfaces even more precarious but both Swanage pairs were able to win their first rubber comfortably. Sam and Gordon 6:2, 6:2 and Alison and Jamie, 6:3, 6:0.
All Swanage had to do was to win one more rubber to secure that league win.
But fortunes started to change and Wimborne suddenly stepped up their game and both Swanage pairs were making far too many errors to make positive progress.
Jamie and Alison lost against the first pair so it was to come down to the result of Gordon and Sam’s match. The Swanage first pair took the first set in their stride winning it 6:2 but then seemed to lose focus. They found themselves down 5:2 in the second and could see a tie-break looming in the not too distant future. A mini team talk in which the pair decided to just throw everything at it resulted in a slow notching up of games in Swanage’s favour. The pairing won 5 games in a row to take the rubber and help to secure the top spot for Swanage.
Winners of their division. Hurray!!!!!Read more from: Category: Match Reports
